Salivary Gland Surgery
Where are the salivary glands located?
We call the major salivary glands the parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands. They all secrete saliva into your mouth:
- Parotid: Near your upper teeth through salivary ducts.
- Submandibular: Located under your tongue.
- Sublingual: Floor of your mouth through many ducts.
Treatments & Management
Salivary Stones
Small stones may pass naturally. Large stones can be shattered via ultrasound waves. Persistent deep stones may require surgical gland removal.
Bacterial & Viral Infections
Bacterial cases need antibiotics and warm compresses. Viral cases rely on bed rest and fluids as antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.
Cysts & Benign Tumors
Small cysts drain without treatment, while large ones or benign tumors usually require surgical removal, sometimes with radiation.
Malignant Tumors
Treatment includes surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Inoperable tumors are managed primarily with radiation and chemo.
Self-Care & Tips
- Chewing sour candies encourages saliva flow.
- Increase fluid intake (oral or IV as needed).
- Apply warm compresses on infected glands.
- Use prescribed medications for dry mouth.
