Swelling in the Neck

neck swelling

What are lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands that filter lymph fluid and trap bacteria or viruses. Part of the immune system, they contain white blood cells that destroy foreign substances. While they generally aren't painful, they often swell in response to local issues.

What causes swollen lymph nodes?

Swelling usually occurs in one location near an injury, infection, or tumor. Identifying which nodes are swollen can help pinpoint the underlying problem:

Neck, Jaw & Ears

Commonly swell due to colds, sore throats, or infections in the head and neck region.

Armpit (Axillary)

Often swell from hand or arm injuries, and less commonly due to systemic issues.

Groin (Inguinal)

Usually related to infections or injuries in the feet, legs, or lower body.

Collarbone

Swelling here can indicate issues in the lungs, breasts, or abdomen and requires medical review.
