Bleeding from Nose (Epistaxis)
Trauma to the nose or overly dry nasal membranes can result in nosebleeds (epistaxis). Depending on the cause, bleeding can be minor or major. Common in dry climates, nosebleeds can also be exacerbated by blood-thinning medications like aspirin or warfarin.
What causes a nosebleed?
Fragile blood vessels in the nasal septum can rupture easily. Common causes include:
- Picking the nose.
- Colds or stuffy nose.
- Blowing the nose.
- Minor injuries.
First Aid for Nosebleeds
1
Sit up and lean slightly forward (do not lie flat unless feeling faint).
2
Pinch the fleshy lower part of the nose firmly for 10-20 minutes.
3
Apply a cold compress to the nose to help blood vessels constrict.
4
After it stops, avoid picking or blowing the nose to prevent recurrence.
